Coalition plans a coded message on the future of the NDIS

The Australian Greens said today that the Coalition flagging a so-called 'scaling back' of DisabilityCare Australia and a potential shift of responsibilities over to Medibank is code for winding back the NDIS.

"We are deeply concerned that this would be the first step in undermining the NDIS and would lead to the death by a thousand cuts of the scheme," said Senator Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on Disability Issues.

"The 'massive bureaucracy' that Hockey wants to get rid of is a body that had unanimous support through Parliament just six months ago, after extensive consultation with the people with disability, families, service providers and the broader community.

"The NDIS has strong community support. The whole idea of the NDIS is to provide comprehensive care and support for people with disability via an independent agency that has empowering people with a disability as its focus.

"The NDIS was deliberately designed to ensure the independence of people with a disability and enable people with disability to exercise choice and control in the pursuit of their goals and the planning and delivery of their supports.

"Shifting away from this approach in order to save money is deeply disrespectful to those that worked so hard for this outcome," concluded Senator Siewert.
