Mr Michael Keenan MP Minister for Justice MEDIA RELEASE

25 October 2013

The tragic death of a pilot during fire fighting operations has highlighted the risks faced by our fire fighters as they work to protect our communities.

Minister for Justice Michael Keenan said the death of David Black was deeply saddening.

“I would like to express my condolences to the pilot’s loved ones,” Mr Keenan said.

“This tragic death is a reminder of the dangers routinely faced by the emergency services, whether on the ground or in the air, when they’re protecting our communities from fire.”

The death occurred yesterday during water-bombing operations to fight a fire west of Ulladulla. The aircraft was contracted to the NSW Rural Fire Service.

Mr Keenan said Australia’s aerial fire fighting capability was critical in responding to bushfires.

“Aerial firebombing has been absolutely vital to the battle to control the NSW fires, including the success yesterday in keeping fires from destroying homes and lives,” Mr Keenan said.

“Aircraft work hand in hand with ground crews, providing valuable support in knocking down a fire front or protecting specific properties.”

“We are reminded of the dangers our fire fighters face and they deserve our thanks and gratitude for their bravery,” Mr Keenan said.
