The Coalition's $7.5 million commitment to the Campbelltown Leisure Centre redevelopment August 24, 2013

If elected, the Coalition will provide $7.5 million to the redevelopment of the Campbelltown Leisure Centre Redevelopment at Botanic Grove, Campbelltown.

The funding will be part of the $17.5 million project to upgrade the Centre to increase the range of sporting and recreational opportunities on offer, including a 25 metre swimming pool and squash court facilities.

The commitment was made by Christopher Pyne, Federal Member for Sturt, and the Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott, during a visit to the Centre at Botanic Grove in Campbelltown.

“After many years of operation the Centre is in desperate need of repairs, upgrades and the provision of new facilities,” said Mr Pyne.

“It is a sorely needed infrastructure hub that will result in jobs and investment in the north-east of Adelaide. It will be a state-of-the-art sports facility that can be utilised by various groups and attract national competitions.

“The Centre remains very valuable to the community, offering netball, volleyball, soccer, indoor bowls, dance and many other activities.

“While the some 8,000 visitors a month appreciate these activities, this facility that was built in 1969 simply won’t be able to remain responsive to the needs of the community without the upgrade.

“Campbelltown is a vibrant community and it deserves modern community facilities.

Mr Abbott paid tribute to the long term advocacy of Christopher Pyne in putting the case for Federal funding for the upgrade.

“Christopher has never given up on working with the Campbelltown City Council to secure the funding that is needed to make this upgrade happen. The Labor Federal Government has knocked back funding bids in 2010, 2011 and twice in 2012.

“We will do what Labor hasn’t and that is upgrade the Campbelltown Leisure centre.

“This is a much-needed and long overdue project and only the Coalition will make it happen.

Christopher Pyne said the Coalition’s commitment is part of our Real Solutions Plan to build a stronger Australia and a better future for all Australians
