Greens Leader on UN climate chief Christiana Figueres 22 October 2013

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne has welcomed comments from UN climate chief Christiana Figueres in support of Australia’s price on pollution in the context of extreme weather and bushfires in NSW.

“Climate scientists and those involved in negotiations towards a new global treaty recognise that extreme weather and bushfires are being driven by global warming,” Senator Milne said.

“I welcome Christiana Figueres’ acknowledgement that we are already paying heavily for increased carbon in the atmosphere with worsening fires, droughts and extreme weather and that this is why we need to price carbon pollution.

“Tony Abbott needs to explain why the big polluters should be able to avoid paying for their pollution and maximise their profits while the community suffers with lives lost, houses burnt down and infrastructure destroyed.

“It is not the big polluters who put dollars into rebuilding lives and communities when climate fuelled extreme weather destroy them, it is taxpayers and kind hearted Australians.”
