Connecting Colac to government services Senator the Hon Jan McLucas Minister for Human Services

Hon Darren Cheeseman MP Member for Corangamite

8 April 2013

A new service centre for Colac that is connecting around 260 local residents per day to essential government services was officially opened today by the Minister for Human Services, Senator Jan McLucas.

Visiting the Colac Service Centre with the Federal Member for Corangamite, Darren Cheeseman, Senator McLucas said the centre is one of only seven nationally to offer comprehensive and integrated rehabilitation services across federal agencies.

"With Centrelink, Medicare and CRS Australia under the one roof, this service centre is the central hub for government services for people in the Otway region," Senator McLucas said.

"This makes it easier for locals who can now access a variety of services in the one place."

Mr Cheeseman said the 20,000-strong Colac Otway Shire deserved excellent service delivery and the Colac service centre provided it.

"Government services are more user friendly and I encourage people to download the new i-phone and android apps that enable you to submit forms and update details all with your smart phone," said Mr Cheeseman

"The Colac Service Centre provides an outreach service upon request to schools and community groups, and it's providing co-located services to help the community.

"Local school students have previously visited the office to discuss potential entitlement to Centrelink payments and services and complete Medicare registrations as needed.

"The Service Centre also oversees a network of Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support services points, ensuring support is available for rural communities.

"People can access Australian Government services through official agents in Apollo Bay, Camperdown and Lorne and Access Points in Beeac, Birregurra and Derrinallum."

The Colac Service Centre at 108 Bromfield Street is open 8.30 to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
