Tamworth to benefit from new one-stop-shop Senator the Hon Jan McLucas Minister for Human Services

18 June 2013

For the first time in Tamworth, several essential Australian Government services will be available in one location for the convenience of local residents.

The brand new, purpose-built service centre at 217-223 Peel Street will open on Monday 1 July and house Centrelink and Medicare services as well as the Department of Veterans' Affairs under the one roof.

Centrelink at 17 White Street and Medicare at Shoppingworld on Bridge Street will move into the new one-stop-shop on Peel Street.

Minister for Human Services, Senator Jan McLucas said the new building would provide better access to services for people in the Tamworth region.

"A one-stop-shop will offer residents a range of the government services in one place, making life easier for locals," Senator McLucas said.

"People lead busy lives and need to be able to access government services in a way that suits them.

The new building will provide a pleasant environment for the community and staff, featuring a spacious open-plan design, more seating and increased access to self-service.

Senator McLucas reminded residents to take advantage of Medicare's new electronic claiming options to get their rebate without having to visit an office.

"Claiming at the doctor is the most convenient option for people, once they have registered their bank account details," Senator McLucas said.

"Many doctors around the country offer electronic claiming, where a patient's claim is processed at the time of their visit and paid into their nominated bank account. Tamworth locals should ask their doctor if they offer this service."

Residents can also claim their Medicare benefits over the phone or for some medical services using the internet after registering for Medicare Online Services. People receive their Medicare benefit directly into their bank account, the next business day.

People can also update personal information, register or change bank account details, order a new Medicare card and request a copy of a Medicare benefit tax statement through these online services.

The new Tamworth Service Centre at 217-223 Peel Street will be open 8.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. Medicare services will remain available on Saturday mornings, 9am - 12.30pm.
