Mums and bubs appy with new delivery 9 July 2013

Senator the Hon Jan McLucas Minister for Human Services

Local families can now lodge Centrelink documents straight from the maternity ward using a fast, easy and secure smartphone app for families.

In Cannington today to officially open the new Centrelink and Medicare co-located Service Centre, Minister for Human Services, Senator Jan McLucas met with expecting parents and staff from Ngala, a local parenting group, about the support available to help raising children a little easier.

Senator McLucas said the Australian Government's Express Plus Families app was a fast, easy and secure way for busy parents to complete a range of Centrelink business.

"The Express Plus Families app allows busy parents to update family income estimates, view transaction history, read letters and change contact details - all without having to visit an office," Senator McLucas said.

"It also means new parents can submit documents, such as proof of birth papers from their hospital room."

"Mum or dad can take a photo of a document with their phone and upload it through the Express Plus Families app. They don't have to visit a service centre or send any paperwork in the mail or by fax - this new app feature means it can be done in the palm of their hand."

Senator McLucas said new parents can also use the app to finalise their Paid Parental Leave claim.

"More than 280,000 new parents across Australia have now benefitted from up to 18 weeks leave under Federal Labor's Paid Parental Leave scheme.

"Expectant parents can claim up to three months early for Paid Parental Leave. Getting the paperwork out of the way means you can focus on the important things, like preparing for the arrival of your child.

"Even better, you can claim online or via your phone from the comfort of your own home. You just need to make sure that you have the relevant details from your employer first, and have spoken to them about your leave arrangements.

"If you're expecting a baby, or will soon adopt a child, I encourage you to get your claims in early so you can enjoy this special time."

Senator McLucas said people lead busy lives and need to be able to access government services in a way that suits them.

"Our government is working hard to ensure people can access important services and payments in a simple and convenient way. Our apps are a great example of how our government is modernising and expanding services."
