Michael Keenan MP - Federal Member for Stirling NINE BOATS IN THREE DAYS AND OVER 35,000 ARRIVALS UNDER LABOR March 26, 2013

The arrival of the eighth and ninth boats in three days, this time with over 100 people on board, means over 35,000 people have arrived by illegal boat under Labor, Shadow Minister for Immigration Scott Morrison and Shadow Minister for Justice, Customs and Border Protection Michael Keenan said.

"The surge in illegal boats continues this year at record levels under Labor's failed border protection policies," Mr Morrison said.

"An Abbott Government will take responsibility to stop the boats.

"By contrast the Gillard Government seeks only to make excuses for doing nothing by continuing to promote their failed Malaysian people swap that was rejected by the High Court and the Houston expert panel in its current form and whose 800 cap could be overwhelmed in a week. This is just an excuse to do nothing and blame others for the Government's own failings.

"Only a change of government will restore the proven measures of the Howard Government and the resolve that drove these policies and their implementation must be restored," Mr Morrison said.

Mr Keenan said: “Over 35,000 people have now embarked on this treacherous journey to Australia since Labor came to office.

“Yesterday’s tragedy was a sad reminder of the dangerous risks people are taking to reach Australia’s shores.

“This perilous journey has cost too many people their lives - the people smuggling trade must be stopped.

“The Government must do everything they can to put an end to this insidious trade in human misery, that risks not only the lives of the people making the journey but also the lives of our Border Protection Command officers,” Mr Keenan said.
