Michael Keenan MP - Federal Member for Stirling Labor all talk and no action when tackling organised crime April 05, 2013

The Gillard Government is once again proving they are all talk and no action when it comes to tackling organised crime, as they withdrew from the agenda their proposed anti-gang laws at the meeting of the nation’s top law officers this week, Shadow Minister for Justice, Customs and Border Protection Michael Keenan said.

“The meeting of state, territory and Commonwealth attorneys-general was the best forum for the Gillard Government to outline their plan for national anti-gang laws but instead they have withdrawn the topic from the agenda - a clear indication that they in fact have no plan,” Mr Keenan said.

“This announcement is sadly typical of the way this Government operates - they pledge to tackle a problem but have no specific plan on how they are going to do that.

“It is further proof that the Prime Minister’s trip to Western Sydney was nothing more than a stunt, with her announcements on national security already going by the wayside.

“There is no clearer message of this Government’s lack of direction for national security than when you go to their website and click on the ‘Strengthening Australia’ link only to receive a message saying ‘We’re sorry the page you are looking for can’t be found’.

“Since coming to office all this Government has done is systematically strip millions in funding and hundreds of personnel from Australia’s national law enforcement agencies - unlike the Coalition who has a clear plan to address national security through the establishment of the Standing Council on Law, Crime and Community Safety which brings together lawmakers and law-enforcers for the first time.

“The best assistance Labor can provide to the states in addressing organised crime, is to make sure that her Government is doing its job properly in protecting Australia’s borders and to stop crippling our federal law enforcement agencies,” Mr Keenan said.
