Health System Needs Dollars Not Promises

Medicare and Public Hospitals need dollars not promises, according to Shadow Health Minister, Michael Lee.

I've lost count of the number of times I've heard the Prime Minister or Dr Wooldridge promise not destroy Medicare.

These promises are totally meaningless if they keep slashing millions of dollars from Medicare, Public Hospitals and people's medicines.

In "Meeting Our Commitments", the Coalition promised:

"Health benefits will not be cut. Health spending will be boosted in net terms uner the Coalition health reform package."

Last year despite all the fine promises of Mr Howard and his ministers the net cut to the Health Budget was $1.7 billion.

Yesterday's document revealed that another $1.3 billion will go this year.

In just two Budgets, the Howard Government are going to wreck Medicare.

Public Hospitals and Medicare can't survive these cuts.

I hope people remember Mr Howard's promise not to destroy our health system.

I hope they remember how he has betrayed them.

Today Dr Wooldridge has confirmed he is looking at ways to change the Medicare levy. The "no new taxes" promise looks set to be broken again, too.
