Michael Keenan MP - Federal Member for Stirling OVER 100 PEOPLE ARRIVING BY BOAT EVERY DAY UNDER KEVIN RUDD’S POLICY FREE ZONE July 09, 2013

The arrival of two more illegal boats, with a total of 169 people on board, means more than 100 people are arriving on illegal boats every day under Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who remains a policy free zone on border protection, Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Scott Morrison and Shadow Minister for Justice, Customs and Border Protection, Michael Keenan said today.

“Over 1,100 people, or more than 100 people a day, have arrived on 14 illegal boats since Kevin Rudd resumed the Prime Ministership under a policy free zone on border protection,” Mr Morrison said.

“As boats continue to arrive daily, all Kevin Rudd does is talk and talk. That’s all Australians will get from Kevin Rudd -just more talk. What Australians will get from the Coalition if elected is action from day one on our borders to stop the boats.

“Today Minister Burke was unable to give a commitment to stop the boats. It’s clear Labor doesn’t want to stop the boats, they just want to talk about the boats from here to the election.

“There is a clear choice for Australians at the upcoming election - a Coalition which will act to stop the boats and won’t give up or a Labor Party that started the boats and has given in to people smugglers,” Mr Morrison said.

Mr Keenan said: “The arrival of yet another two illegal boats carrying 98 and 71 people means over 1000 people have now arrived since Kevin Rudd became Prime Minister again.

“The Australian people have every reason to be demanding answers from the very man who opened up Australia’s borders to people smugglers, causing 46,540 people to arrive on 756 illegal boats since Labor came to Government in 2007.

“With exactly 601 illegal boats and 39,137 people having arrived since the 2010 election the Coalition calls on the Government to name the election date and put an end to this border protection chaos.

“What we’ve seen is an open invitation to people smugglers from both the Rudd and Gillard Governments that has been running for years - only a Coalition Government has the resolve to put an end to this untenable daily flow of illegal boats,” Mr Keenan said.
