Michael Keenan MP - Federal Member for Stirling KEVIN 764 THE LATEST ARRIVAL AS BOATS ACCELERATE July 14, 2013

The arrival of three more illegal boats including the latest, Kevin 764, means over 2,000 people have arrived in the less than three weeks since Kevin Rudd was reinstated, Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Scott Morrison and Shadow Minister for Justice, Customs and Border Protection, Michael Keenan said today.

"The arrival of Kevin 764, the 764th arrival since Kevin Rudd abolished the Howard Government's proven border protection policies, follows yet another tragedy at sea," Mr Morrison said.

“These tragic incidents remind us yet again of why the boats must be stopped and why the Coalition if elected will implement the full suite of proven policy measures with the necessary resolve to get it done.

“More talk from Kevin Rudd won't stop the boats or put an end to the last six years of chaos, cost and tragedy.

“An average of more than 110 people have arrived since Kevin Rudd was reinstated. Arrivals are clearly escalating and all Kevin Rudd can offer is more talk at a meeting with no date which he is not organising.

“Labor don't believe in stopping the boats and have given up on our borders. The Coalition will not give up,” Mr Morrison said.

Mr Keenan said: “Another three boats have been intercepted, as tragically yesterday another vessel sunk on its way to Australia.

“This latest tragedy serves as a terrible reminder of the risks associated with undertaking this perilous journey and the dangers of using people smugglers.

“The Coalition would like to acknowledge the courage and bravery shown by our Customs and Border Protection officers who tried to save as many lives as possible.

“No one wants to see anymore repeats of these tragedies at sea, like the ones that have occurred over the last five years.

“That is why it is crucial that a full suite of proven policies is implemented as a proper deterrent to break the people smugglers’ business model,” Mr Keenan said.
