Senator Penny Wright MEDIA RELEASE 10 September 2013

New Parliament must commit to reducing suicide rates

The Australian Greens will work with other parties in the new parliament to tackle suicide rates, especially in rural areas, says Australian Greens spokesperson for mental health Senator Penny Wright.

Speaking on World Suicide Prevention Day, Senator Wright said research continued to show suicide rates were higher in rural and regional areas.

"Every suicide has a profound impact on families and whole communities. We all need to work urgently on reversing this devastating trend," Senator Wright said.

"The Australian Greens recognise the need for public education around the complexity of suicide and how communities and organisations, particularly in rural and regional areas, can work together to reduce suicide rates.

"Males, youth, farmers and Indigenous people are the groups most vulnerable to suicide in rural areas - we need to do more to reach these groups and support them.

"I hope the opportunities provided by the new Parliament will see this addressed as a priority and I look forward to discussions across the political spectrum on how we can address the shortfall of adequate services in the bush." Media contact: Danielle Forsyth 0417 173 508
