LABOR’S DEFENCE CUTS WORRY AUSTRALIA’S ALLIES July 18, 2012 ยท 1 Comment

Labor’s 2012/13 budget, which will see a cut to Defence spending of over $5bn, has drawn fire from Richard Armitage, the former United States Deputy Secretary of State.

Mr Armitage has condemned the massive cuts to Defence’s budget stating that Australia’s credibility is under threat in our region and around the world among our allies.

“Mr Armitage is the latest defence expert to condemn Labor’s savage attack on Defence - this should be a massive wake up call to Stephen Smith and Julia Gillard, but they haven’t even flinched”, Senator Humphries said.

The most recent defence cuts will reduce Australia’s defence spending as a percentage of gross domestic product to the lowest level since 1938.

“The decisions this Labor government are making for Defence are hurting our international relations and the ADF’s ability to do its job.

“Instead of advocating for essential equipment upgrades and better conditions for Defence, Minister Smith rolled over and opened Defence’s wallet for the government to take what it wanted.

“The world is watching Australia and is expressing concern about the way the Gillard government is handling our international and defence relationships, but the Prime Minister is too focussed on fighting off attacks from her own party than to act in Australia’s best interest.

“The reality is that Defence will continue suffer under Labor and only a Coalition government will be able to provide certainty to defence industry and the wider ADF community”, Senator Humphries concluded.
