Campaign Media Release

Campaign Spokesperson Mark Dreyfus

Clive Palmer today made a range of new statements about the Liberal National Party candidate for Fisher Mal Brough’s involvement in the James Ashby case.

These included a statement that Mr Brough asked Mr Palmer to fund James Ashby’s case and meet with lawyers regarding the Ashby case.

These statements raise serious questions about Mr Abbott’s candidate for Fisher.

It is time that Mr Abbott provided some straight answers.

1. Were Mr Abbott or other senior Liberals aware of any allegations about funding the Ashby case? 2. Have Mr Abbott or other senior Liberals spoken to Mr Brough about these allegations today or in the past or sought any briefing on the matter? 3. If not, why not? 4. Does Mr Abbott stand by his comment from 19 December 2012 that he is

"confident he (Mr Brough) has acted rightly at all times”? 5. If so, when does he plan to visit the electorate of Fisher to campaign with Mr Brough?

This is a test of judgement for Mr Abbott. It is critical that he explain whether or not he continues to endorse Mr Brough as his candidate for Fisher.
