Abbott disguises cuts as health policy

Australian Greens health spokesperson, Senator Richard Di Natale, said today that the Coalition's health policy completely fails to deal with major health challenges facing the nation.

"Tony Abbott is trying to disguise future cuts to primary care and prevention as health policy," said Dr Di Natale.

"What's clear is that Medicare locals and the Preventive Health Agency ANPHA face the axe under an Abbott government.

"Medicare locals are crucially important for coordinating services such as after-hours care. And the Preventive Health Agency is a cost-effective investment in keeping people out of hospitals.

"The Coalition has ignored the major health challenges facing the country. Tony Abbott has no plans for bringing down out of pocket health costs, hospital waiting lists, or improving dental care.

"The Greens have already released costed policies that will boost bulk billing rates and bring dental into Medicare. We will also invest heavily in medical research and rural health, including over half a billion dollars in rural mental health initiatives alone.

"I welcome the announcements from both parties today on tobacco donations. Tony Abbott must now commit to getting taxpayer dollars out of the tobacco industry by directing commonwealth superannuation funds to divest their tobacco holdings."
