PRESS RELEASE THE HON. TONY ABBOTT MHR LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WARRINGAH

THE COALITION’S SUPPORT FOR BEAR COTTAGE

A Coalition government will provide $2 million to support the important work of the only dedicated children’s palliative care facility in New South Wales, Bear Cottage.

This investment will help ensure more families can access its precious services into the future.

Since 2001, Bear Cottage has been providing much-needed support and respite for families of children with life-limiting conditions. Remarkably, it is almost entirely funded by the generosity of the community.

Bear Cottage cared for over 200 children last year alone, from infants to teenagers. This also included 16 children who came to Bear Cottage for end-of-life care.

In the last ten years, Bear Cottage has supported around 600 families who need this care at a difficult time in life.

Within this safe and comfortable environment, the children are provided world class paediatric medical care through Bear Cottage’s affiliation with The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

As Member for Warringah and as a former Health Minister, I have seen first-hand the outstanding work Bear Cottage does with families and children.

Like any parent, I wish there was not a need for facilities like Bear Cottage, but sadly there is.

Bear Cottage is a much-loved institution in Warringah and throughout Sydney, because it does the work of angels. It is a place of love and kindness during times of fear, pain and grief.

I believe in the work of Bear Cottage and in the need for more children’s palliative care services across Australia. That is why in 1999 and in 2005, I dedicated my annual 1,000 kilometre Pollie Pedal bike ride to Bear Cottage.

It is also why the Coalition has committed $5.5 million to establish Queensland’s first dedicated children’s palliative care facility to be known as Hummingbird House.

I pay tribute to the staff, volunteers and supporters of Bear Cottage who do tremendous work every day. This commitment will allow Bear Cottage to help even more families.
