Ask Kevin Rudd Anything - except PRISM Australian Greens communications spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam. 30 August 2013.

Kevin Rudd’s “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit failed to live up to its name, with the Prime Minister ignoring questions about PRISM and surveillance.

“Reddit forums generate more questions than can be answered, but Mr Rudd ignored the highest ranking questions about large-scale warrantless surveillance,” said Senator Scott Ludlam, Australian Greens communications spokesperson.

“The government and opposition have both sought to shut down debate in the parliament and media, refusing to comment while insisting that Australian and US authorities are acting within the law and under strict judicial oversight.

“Subsequent leaked audits of the NSA and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court reveal that the surveillance has been illegal, individuals have abused their power and access, and senior US politicians and officials have perjured themselves while imposing ever increasing punishments on whistleblowers and journalists reporting facts in the public interest.

“The companies that denied knowledge were in fact paid to offset their compliance costs.

“Reddit users join many Australians in wanting to know whether their emails, audio, video chats, photographs, purchases are secure or being shared by the US National Security Agency.

“The Greens have long campaigned for the human right to privacy - online and offline - and the legitimate expectation that our government will protect and not violate these democratic freedoms.

“While these illegal activities remain unchallenged, citizens are treated as suspects and our human right to privacy, freedom of expression and opinion are trampled,” concluded Senator Ludlam

Senator Ludlam launched a number of measures to wind back surveillance earlier this week: http://greens.org.au/surveillance and is holding his second Ask Me Anything on Reddit on Monday 2 September 6.30 - 8.30pm WST , 8.30-10.30 pm EST
