Senator Penny Wright MEDIA RELEASE 30 August 2013 Greens praise War Memorial honour for peacekeepers

Australian Greens spokesperson for Veterans' Affairs Senator Penny Wright has praised the advocacy and community campaigning which has led to the inclusion of peacekeepers on the Honour Roll at the Australian War Memorial.

Speaking at the unveiling today, Senator Wright said tens of thousands of Australians had been involved in this campaign to properly commemorate peacekeepers who have fallen in the line of duty.

"Peacekeepers are defence force and police service men and women who represent Australia in situations of conflict and danger, and their service should not be seen differently because they wear the UN blue beret," Senator Wright said.

"I have been privileged to work alongside the Australian Peacekeeper and Peacemaker Veterans Association in this campaign and stand with them today. I applaud their tenacity and dedication over more than 14 years.

"Numerous family members like Avril Clark, Sarah McCarthy and Peter Pridue have also fought long and hard to have their loved ones honoured.

"Their efforts have been rewarded today and they will finally have the opportunity to place a red poppy next to their loved ones' names.

"The Australian Greens are proud to have been a part of this campaign at a parliamentary level and we commend the Australian War Memorial for taking the step to honour peacekeepers who have fallen in the line of duty.

"We must always be conscious of their efforts and never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of us all."
