Federal Court of Australia appointment announced

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus QC today announced the appointment of Michael Wigney SC to the Federal Court of Australia.

Mr Wigney will serve in the Sydney Registry with effect from 9 September 2013.

Mr Wigney was appointed prior to the caretaker period, but the appointment was not announced because he was appearing as counsel in an ongoing court hearing. The Opposition was advised of the appointment and the delay in announcement.

“I am delighted to be able to announce another outstanding judicial appointment,” Mr Dreyfus said.

“Mr Wigney joins two new appointments to the Federal Court of Australia, Darryl Rangiah QC and Dr Melissa Perry QC, announced previously.

“I thank them all for their commitment to serving the Australian people through the federal judiciary,” Mr Dreyfus said.

The three additional appointments to the Federal Court have been made possible following the Government’s announcement on 14 May 2013 of $118.2 million additional funding to improve access to justice for Australians.

A short professional biography of Mr Wigney follows.
