MEDIA RELEASE Wednesday 28 August 2013 RUDD NEEDS TO RULE OUT FURTHER DEFENCE CLOSURES AND JOB LOSSES IN NSW Kevin Rudd must rule out any further Defence closures in NSW following his proposal yesterday to close the historic Garden Island naval base in Sydney, putting thousands of jobs at risk. Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment Andrew Stoner said Defence and the defence industry make an enormous economic contribution to the State, providing more than 33,000 jobs across Sydney and regional NSW. “Kevin Rudd needs to unequivocally rule out further Defence facility closures in NSW,” Mr Stoner said. “The Prime Minister’s thought bubble yesterday threatens to not only cost NSW thousands of jobs, but also has the potential to impact Defence and industry confidence in NSW. “With more than 80 bases and facilities, NSW is Australia’s most significant state for Defence activity and Kevin Rudd needs to come clean on any other secret plans for Defence closures in NSW. “Kevin Rudd needs to rule out closing further Defence bases and facilities, including:  Liverpool Military Area & Holsworthy Barracks (approx. 4,000 jobs);  RAAF Base Williamtown (approx. 4,000 jobs);  Lone Pine Barracks in Singleton (approx. 500 jobs);  HMAS Albatross in Nowra on the South Coast (approx. 1,800 jobs);  RAAF Flying Base in Tamworth (approx. 74 full time jobs, 25 subcontractor jobs, and 47 Defence Force personnel);  RAAF Base Wagga Wagga / Army Recruit Training Centre Kapooka;  RAAF Base Richmond; and  RAAF Base Glenbrook. “These bases sustain thousands of jobs and generate significant direct and indirect benefits for local economies. “With the State economy showing strong signs of growth, the last thing we need is for the Prime Minister to arbitrarily close more defence bases and facilities and take jobs away from NSW.” Media: Ben Shine 0431 096 596
