Attorney-General must stop lying to his constituents

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus has been caught peddling lies to his constituents.

In a letter mailed to electors in his seat of Isaacs, Mr Dreyfus made a number of assertions including claims that the Coalition would increase the GST and reduce spending on education.

These statements are false, and Mr Dreyfus knows it.

It is bad enough for any politician to lie to their constituents, but Mr Dreyfus is more than just any other politician. As the Attorney-General, he is the First Law Officer of the Commonwealth and he has a duty to uphold the highest standards of integrity.

Unfortunately, Mr Dreyfus has shown himself to be a person who will stop at nothing to peddle Labor Party lies.

It was Mr Dreyfus who, only two weeks ago, trashed the caretaker conventions - the important constitutional conventions which provide the guidelines for proper conduct by the government during the election campaign period - to authorise party-political advertisements at taxpayers’ expense.

Mr Dreyfus is prepared to destroy important constitutional principles, rather than be their guardian.

He is prepared to tell outright lies to his constituents, rather than uphold proper standards of honesty and integrity.

The Australian people cannot have confidence in Mr Dreyfus as the nation’s first Law Officer.
