This month the Australian Government is marking the fourth year of record levels of support to families with the cost of child care.

In June 2008, the Government increased the Child Care Rebate payment from 30 to 50 percent of parents’ out-of-pocket costs, up to $7500 per child per year. Four years later, more than 785 000 Australian families have benefited from this additional Government assistance.

Minister for Early Childhood and Child Care, Kate Ellis said that the higher levels of Australian Government assistance are making a real difference to Australian families.

“The percentage of household income spent on child care has almost halved when compared to 2004, dropping from 13 per cent of out-of-pocket costs to 7.5 per cent in 2011 for families with one child in care and earning $75,000 per year,” Ms Ellis said.

“That’s because - thanks to the changes this Government has made - around $734 million of additional assistance has been provided to families using child care in the last year alone”.

“We recognise that child care costs do put a strain on the family budget and we’re always open to working with parents and the child care sector about how we can continue to support Australian families.

Ms Ellis reminded parents and carers to take advantage of the flexible arrangements this Government has put in place, so they can receive their payments in a way that best suit their family.

“Parents now have more choice in payment delivery that ever before and can select the arrangements that work best for their household budget,” Ms Ellis said.

“Families can choose to have their child care rebate payments made fortnightly or quarterly and they can also have the rebate paid directly to their child care service in order to receive an immediate reduction on their bills.

Families wishing to explore the options or change the way they receive the Child Care Rebate can use the Department of Human Services’ online services or phone the self-service facility on 13 61 50 until the end of June.
