More than 250 jobs will be up for grabs today at the Australian Government Jobs and Skills Expo in Ipswich.

The Expo will be held at the Ipswich Showgrounds Pavilion, between 10am and 3pm, giving locals the chance to meet potential employers, training organisations and industry representatives.

Minister for Employment Participation Kate Ellis said the Expo provides opportunities for both job seekers and local employers.

“This is a great chance for local job seekers and businesses to come together and discuss local job opportunities,” Ms Ellis said.

“The Expo will have a jobs board showing what positions are available and a skills board

where local training organisations will promote training opportunities in the region.”

Minister for Human Services Senator Kim Carr encouraged job seekers to attend the Expo and take advantage of the many opportunities on offer.

“Queenslanders have faced some tough times recently. The Government and the community are coming together today to give people a chance to get into work or training,” Senator Kim Carr said.

“There will be more than 70 exhibitors at the Expo, giving job seekers a chance to meet and talk with several employers in a single day. I encourage anyone interested to come along.”

The Australian Government Jobs and Skills Expos are being held across the country to provide employment and skills training opportunities for areas that continue to do it tough.

Local Member for Blair Mr Shayne Neumann said having a Jobs and Skills Expo hosted in Ipswich was an important part of the Government’s efforts to keep local residents in work.

“A previous Australian Government Jobs and Skills Expos was held in Ipswich in 2010 which was a resounding success with more than 3,200 local job seekers connected with hundreds of jobs and skills training opportunities,” Mr Neumann said.

“My message to job seekers in Ipswich and surrounding regions is to take advantage of this great opportunity because it is never too late to up-skill, re-skill or re-engage in the paid workforce.”

Since September 2009 the Australian Government has held 52 Expos and more than 19,700 Australians have been connected with jobs.

“We’re looking to build on the success of the program by continuing to hold Expos through until 2013 and I can’t wait to see the results here in Ipswich,” Ms Ellis said.
