More than 600 jobs will be up for grabs today at the Australian Government Jobs and Skills Expo in Lidcombe.

The Expo will be held at the Anne Clarke Centre (NSW Netball Association Stadium), between 10am and 3pm, giving job seekers from western Sydney the chance to meet potential employers, training organisations and industry representatives.

Minister for Employment Participation Kate Ellis said the Expo provides opportunities for both job seekers and local employers.

“This is a great chance for local job seekers and businesses to come together and discuss local job opportunities,” Ms Ellis said.

“The Expo will have a jobs board showing what positions are available and a skills board

where local training organisations will promote training opportunities in the region.”

Minister for Human Services Senator Kim Carr encouraged job seekers to attend the Expo and take advantage of the many opportunities on offer.

“Many people in Australia - including in western Sydney - have faced hard times lately whether it be due to the current patchwork economy, or as a result of other economic factors. The Government and the community are pulling together to make sure everyone can access the opportunities this country can provide,” Mr Carr said.

“There will be up to 100 exhibitors at the Lidcombe Expo today, so I encourage all interested job seekers to come with their resumes and meet a number of employers in a single day.”

The Australian Government Jobs and Skills Expos are being held across the country to provide employment and skills training opportunities for areas that continue to do it tough.

Local Member for Reid Mr John Murphy said having a Jobs and Skills Expo hosted in Lidcombe was an important part of the Government’s efforts to keep local residents in work.

“Previous Australian Government Jobs and Skills Expos held in Sydney in recent times were a resounding success with more than 2,600 job seekers connected with jobs,” Mr Murphy said.

“My message to job seekers in Lidcombe and the surrounding suburbs of Parramatta and Bankstown is to take advantage of this great opportunity because it is never too late to up-skill, re-skill or re-engage in the paid workforce.”

Since September 2009 the Australian Government has held 53 Expos and more than 19,700 Australians have been connected with jobs.

“We’re looking to build on the success of the program by continuing to hold Expos and I can’t wait to see the results here in Lidcombe,” Ms Ellis said.
