More than 5300 people attended the Australian Government Jobs and Skills Expo in Lidcombe yesterday where they learned about the employment and skills training opportunities on offer in the area.

Minister for Employment Participation Ms Kate Ellis said the Lidcombe Jobs and Skills Expo was a great success.

“While unemployment rates in some regions have improved, there’s more work to be done in many places, including here in western Sydney,” Ms Ellis said.

“People took advantage of more than 1300 job opportunities, submitting 2800 resumes to up to 100 exhibitors.

“Exhibitors have told us as many as 735 of the job vacancies are expected to be filled by

job seekers who attended the Expo.”

Minister for Human Services Senator Kim Carr said the outcome was a testament to the strength of the community.

“This is a great outcome from today’s Expo. We need to continue to work together to ensure everyone can access the opportunities this country can provide,” he said.

Local Member for Reid John Murphy praised local job seekers and organisations who worked together to make the day a success.

“The Jobs and Skills Expo was a great boost for the region and a wonderful instance of local organisations working together to help people find a job,” Mr Murphy said.

“It is never too late to up-skill, re-skill or engage in the workforce and the Expo helped people in Lidcombe and the surrounding areas to take the first step.”

Since October 2009, 54 Expos have been held across the country, as part of the Gillard Labor Government’s $3 billion ‘Building Australia’s Future Workforce’ package.
