Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury

Minister for Community Services Julie Collins

Neighbourhood houses and community centres across Australia stand to benefit from more support thanks to a decision by Federal Labor to enable tax deductible donations to be made to the Australian Neighbourhood Houses and Centres Association (ANHCA).

Minister for Community Services Julie Collins and Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury said that the granting of deductible gift recipient (DGR) status to ANHCA will make a big difference in communities across Australia.

“ANHCA is now in a position to coordinate national fundraising efforts for all its members,” Minister Collins said during a visit to Risdon Vale Neighbourhood Centre in Tasmania today.

“People are able to make tax deductible donations to the ANHCA public fund which can then be directed to neighbourhood houses and community centres.”

Mr Bradbury said the flow on effect of the ANHCA DGR status would be significant.

“Although some neighbourhood houses and community centres already have DGR status, many do not,” Mr Bradbury said.

“The decision to list the ANHCA as a DGR in the tax law will enable neighbourhood houses and centres to broaden their funding base over time and attract more support from philanthropic trusts, foundations, corporations and the wider Australian community.

Minister Collins said more than 1000 neighbourhood houses and community centres and countless families and individuals across Australia stood to benefit from the change.

“We know that neighbourhood houses and community centres play a vital role in creating vibrant, healthy and safe communities.

“They provide social, educational and recreational activities and help prevent some of the consequences that can flow from social exclusion, including unemployment, mental illness, family breakdown and homelessness.

“The ability to secure more philanthropic funding will help neighbourhood houses and community centres to strengthen local networks, promote community participation and reduce social isolation.”

Legislation granting ANHCA DGR status passed the Australian Parliament in June 2013, and donations to ANHCA are deductible from 1 July 2013.
