Minister for the Carbon Tax caught out making false claims - about the Carbon Tax

More Labor Members have been exposed distributing misleading advertising claiming that Labor has ‘abolished’ or ‘terminated’ the Carbon Tax.

Now even the Minister for Climate Change, Mark Butler has been caught doing just that.

Mr Butler’s most recent message to his electorate includes the headline:

Mr Butler is deliberately seeking to mislead his electorate on a policy that he himself is responsible for.

The Carbon Tax continues to cost families $545 this year. If Kevin Rudd and Labor are re-elected, it will cost families $3,000 over the next six years.

The Carbon Tax has not been terminated - it has increased from $23 per tonne to $24.15 since Mr Rudd returned as Prime Minister. His own Budget papers of a week ago show it will increase by a further 50% between now and 2019.

Contrary to Mr Butler’s claim, he and Kevin Rudd have done nothing to amend the Carbon Tax.

It continues to exist in exactly the same form in which it was implemented under Julia Gillard.

Minister Kate Lundy has also been caught out making similarly misleading statements, writing in a recent newsletter:

“Moving to an ETS early will lower the average household costs by around $7.30 per week, or $380 over the year, in 2013-14.”

Even under Kevin Rudd’s proposed changes - which are yet to be legislated - the Carbon Tax will remain in place with no change whatsoever for the rest of 2013-14.

Nor will household costs be $380 lower per year - as Mr Rudd repeatedly insisted and had to be repeatedly corrected by his own Treasurer.

The Carbon Tax will continue to drive up electricity prices, grocery bills and hurt Australian families.

The Labor Government is the only Government in Australia with a deliberate policy to increase electricity prices for all households, as well as the cost of doing business in Australia.

If Kevin Rudd is re-elected the Carbon Tax will not only stay but it will continue to increase.

Mr Rudd must explain why, like Julia Gillard, he says there will be no Carbon Tax under his Government when there continues to be.
