JOINT PRESS RELEASE

THE HON. TONY ABBOTT MHR, LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION THE HON. ADAM GILES MLA, CHIEF MINISTER THE HON. PETER DUTTON MHR, SHADOW MINISTER FOR HEALTH AND AGEING MRS. NATASHA GRIGGS MHR, FEDERAL MEMBER FOR SOLOMON

THE COALITION’S COMMITMENT TO BUILD PALMERSTON HOSPITAL

A Coalition government in Canberra will help the Northern Territory Government to build the $150 million Palmerston Hospital.

If elected, the federal Coalition will provide $110 million to get this important project underway.

Our commitment will make this long overdue project a reality.

If elected, work will commence within one year.

Only the Coalition can be trusted to deliver this project. Labor had 11 years in office in Darwin and has now had six years in Canberra. If Labor was serious, the new hospital would have been built by now.

The Coalition and the Northern Territory Country Liberals’ plan will deliver a bigger, better hospital than Labor’s rehashed and undelivered promise.

A Federal Coalition government will provide $110 million and the Northern Territory Government will provide $40 million to get this important project underway.

The Territory population is growing and this new hospital will provide:

 a bigger site and bigger facility for better medical care;  a full emergency department, including Emergency Specialists;  a paediatrics ward; and  elective surgery capabilities with a focus on low acuity services.

None of these would be delivered under Labor’s original scaled down version of a smaller facility on a smaller site.

Other services will continue to be explored as part of the scoping study, master plan and community consultation.

For many reasons, the overall health of Territorians lags the rest for Australia and addressing these deficiencies starts with investing in better health services.

Yesterday, the Coalition released our Policy to Support Australia’s Health System. Our approach is to focus Labor’s enormous bureaucracy on frontline services.

Our policy stands in stark contrast to the $1.6 billion in cuts which Labor hit hospitals with throughout Australia last year.

The Coalition’s commitment to build Palmerston Hospital is part of our Real Solutions Plan to build a stronger Australia and a better future for all Australians.
