A job marketplace is coming to Townsville and Senator for Queensland, Jan McLucas is encouraging local residents of all ages to attend.

The Australian Government’s Jobs and Skills Expo will be in Townsville on Wednesday 1 August 2012, bringing local jobs seekers, employers and training providers together under one roof.

“Job seekers and those looking to improve their skills will find hundreds of job and training opportunities at the expo,” Senator McLucas said.

“The Jobs and Skills Expo is part of the Australian Government’s action plan to tackle unemployment and skills gaps in North Queensland.

“Previous Jobs and Skills Expos held in Townsville have been a huge success with more than 5000 job seekers connected jobs and training opportunities.”

There will be large jobs boards filled with vacancies for all ages and skills levels and a skills board where registered training organisations will promote courses available in the area.

The Expo will be held at the Wellington Street PCYC at Aitkenvale from 10am to 3pm on Wednesday 1 August.

Minister for Employment Participation, Kate Ellis encouraged job seekers, employers and training and educational organisations in the region to get involved in the expo, which is part of the Government’s Building Australia’s Future Workforce initiative.

“This is an excellent opportunity for local job seekers and people interested in undertaking further skills training to meet a range of employers and training providers in a single location,” Ms Ellis said.

“Our Government is supporting employers through programs and incentives that help give Australians the skills employers are looking for, and the Jobs and Skills Expos provide a great opportunity to connect employers with potential employees.

“The expos are designed to create a jobs and skills marketplace, connecting job seekers with jobs and skills training opportunities. There will be employers, employment services providers and training providers together with other agencies, all under one roof, all on one day.”

Minister for Human Services, Senator Kim Carr said the Townsville Jobs and Skills Expo is part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to helping people get into work or training.

“We want everyone to be able to share in the economic benefits of the mining boom. Many people in North Queensland want to have that opportunity. This expo can help them get a job in their local area,” Senator Carr said.

“If you want to learn new skills, or get back into the workplace then this expo is a good place to start.

“Employers can have their job vacancy or skills training opportunity displayed on the day even if they can’t come along, so I encourage anyone interested to contact the organisers.”

Since October 2009, the 55 Jobs and Skills Expos held across Australia have connected more than 20,000 people to jobs and many thousands more to training opportunities.
