PRESS RELEASE

THE HON. TONY ABBOTT MHR, LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

THE COALITION’S COMMITMENT TO UPGRADE ADELAIDE’S NORTH-SOUTH ROAD CORRIDOR

The Coalition will invest $500 million to support the continued upgrade of the North-South Road Corridor.

We expect our commitment will be directed to the South Road upgrade recommended by the ‘Darlington Transport Study’. The Study recommended an upgrade of South Road where it connects to the Southern Expressway.

The project will include:

• South Road being reconfigured between the Southern Expressway and north of Sturt Road into an expressway-standard road incorporating road network modifications; • Grade separation of South Road as an underpass extending below Flinders Drive and Sturt Road; and • Connection of the Darlington Interchange with the Southern Expressway to provide for two way flow.

The Coalition is committed to the continued upgrade of the North-South Corridor. South Australians can have confidence that the Coalition will provide Adelaide with the infrastructure of the 21st century.

With congestion expected to cost the South Australian economy over $1 billion by 2020, this commitment is an investment in the productivity of South Australia.

We want a South Australian economy with better infrastructure, more jobs and high productivity. The North-South Road Upgrade is part of that plan.

In keeping with the Coalition’s commitment to increase transparency in the funding of infrastructure, we will request that Infrastructure Australia undertake and publish a cost-benefit analysis of the project.

We extend a hand to the South Australian Government to make this upgrade happen. We will work with the state government to develop the business case for the project as well as the remaining sections of the Corridor.

While the business case will be assessed by Infrastructure Australia, we are confident that the project would pass Infrastructure Australia’s analysis on a stand-alone basis.

The Upgrade will also tackle congestion so that people can spend less time in traffic and more time with family.

Building modern infrastructure is part of the Coalition’s Real Solutions Plan. Supporting the upgrade of the North-South Corridor is part of Our Plan to build a stronger Australia and a better future for all Australians.
