MURRAY GOULBURN SHOCK

On Wednesday there was the shock announcement of a huge number of new job losses, in fact some 72 positions to go, from Murray Goulburn Dairy factories across the state. Thirty-eight of these positions will be axed from the Cobram Murray Goulburn factory and four at Rochester.

Unfortunately Murray Goulburn has had to pay $14mill to Labor’s carbon tax. The carbon tax did not add one cent of additional production or better capacity to compete against imports or improve our export markets. Nor has it helped save the planet from global warming.

That $14mill carbon tax was equal to a loss of half a cent a litre on every farms milk cheque. Dairy farmers and the Co-op have also been hit by massive increases in refrigerant gas prices which also attract a carbon equivalent tax.

While Labor compensated other industries for the carbon tax they walked away from food manufacturing and farmers

‘The good news is that the $14mill carbon tax and refrigerant gas tax will immediately be axed if the Coalition is elected. Unfortunately this will be too late for the regional people who have lost their jobs. Our families whose jobs have gone from Cobram and Rochester will have paid a very heavy price for the Labor party’s refusal to understand that manufacturing goes way beyond car making plants on the seaboard.
