Albanese’s $4B Bruce Highway sham exposed

29th May, 2013

“FOR a month Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese has been spruiking a $4.1 billion commitment for the Bruce Highway, but today that promise was exposed as just another Labor sham,” Nationals leader and Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Warren Truss said.

“We already knew that of the $4.1 billion, $1.7 billion is for previously announced projects. Now we learn that $1.1 billion will not be available until after 2019.

“The Minister has been talking up his $4 billion for the Bruce Highway to anyone who’ll listen since he and the Prime Minister made their promise in Rockhampton in April.

“He then repeated it in his Budget night media release. He then went to Mackay and announced it again.

“Today, he was exposed as a serial fraudster.

“During Senate Estimates in Canberra today, Minister Albanese’s own Department blew the lid off Labor’s litany of Bruce Highway porkies.

“Under Labor, the Department has not yet scheduled any works over the next 10 years on the Bruce Highway.”

The startling revelation came during questioning in Senate Estimates today…

Senator Ian MacDonald: “Could you give me a financial year by financial year breakdown of the Federal Government’s $4.1 billion announcement for the Bruce Highway?”

Mr Mike Mrdak, Secretary, Department of Infrastructure and Transport: “Not at this stage Senator. I’m sorry. The Government has announced its $4.1 billion programme over 10 years but has not at this stage settled cash profiles for the individual projects that it has nominated for proceeding in Nation Building 2 and beyond.”

“Labor is selling communities along the Bruce Highway short and trying to con them with a $4 billion carrot that, if you blink, it’s gone,” Mr Truss added.

“This is a government that by its own actions proves time and time again it cannot be trusted.

“The Coalition will detail our comprehensive funding for the Bruce Highway before the election so people can compare our commitment with Labor’s hollow promises.”
