A record number of families in Victoria are taking up child care as a result of the Australian Government's measures to make childcare fees more affordable.

Minister for Early Childhood and Child Care Kate Ellis said the latest Child Care Update data shows there was a record number of Victorian families using child care services over the past year.

“There are now more children in child care than ever because of the changes we’ve made to make child care more affordable for families,” Minister Ellis said.

“New figures show there has been an 11.4 per cent increase in the number of Victorian children now in long day care over the last year - above the national average of 9.1 per cent.

“On top of this more than 50 new services have started up in Victoria over the year, which is welcome news for families who want to see waiting lists ease.”

Minister Ellis headed into Melbourne Ports to tour Tree House Child Care in St Kilda and

to hear from local child care staff and parents.

“The Federal Government funded two centres in Melbourne Ports, one in St Kilda and one in Port Melbourne,” Federal Member for Melbourne Ports Michael Danby said.

“This Government has recognised the growing need for Australian families to access quality and affordable childcare and I am thrilled that the people, not just in my electorate but across the whole country are benefiting from this important work.”

“Since coming into government we’ve increased the Child Care Rebate to 50 per cent of out of pocket costs and increased the Child Care Rebate cap to $7500 per child per year to help support more families access child care,” Minister Ellis said.

“Making sure there are enough child care places available is important to give more Victorian parents the opportunity of returning to work to contribute to the family budget.

“The Federal Government wants to see more children accessing child care places in the future, and we have to plan now to make sure there are enough places where they are needed.

“We’re calling on the states and territories to look at ways to free up more land for child care centres.

"We're looking at all options and are prepared to look at any way we can work with the states and territories to overcome planning barriers and we will start the discussion with states and territory governments at the first available opportunity at the next ministerial council meeting.

“Ultimately we want to see more children access quality early learning programs to give them the best start at life.”

Minister Ellis wrote to all State and Territory Ministers earlier this month to put child care availability on the agenda at the next Ministerial Council.
