ADF ROLE IN DRUG INTERCEPTION SHOULD BE POLICY

Shadow Defence Minister Arch Bevis has called on the Government to make a clear policy statement regarding the use of the Defence Forces in protecting Australia's coastline against drug smuggling.

Mr Bevis said that while he welcomed Minister Ian McLachlan's comments implying that the ADF would be used to combat the drug trade he had concerns that it was an off the cuff commitment.

'By making such a commitment in this fashion, the Minister has not given the matter the importance it deserves,' Mr Bevis said„

'Instead, I would call on the Minister and the Government to make a clear policy statement that the ADF use its surveillance and interception capabilities to help stop drugs entering the country.'

Please note: Mr Bevis issued a media release calling for ADF capabilities to be used to fight drug trafficking on 31 October. Please phone 07 3356 1555 for a copy.
