MEDIA RELEASE

THE NEW HUMAN RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES COMMISSION IS A SHAM

"The Federal Government has once again shown its complete contempt for the protection of the human rights of ordinary Australians through its decision to establish a Human Rights and Responsibilities Commission," Shadow Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Senator Nick Bollcus said today.

"The new Commission is no more than a pathetic ruse to cover the fact that the Government has decided not to re-appoint the Disability Discrimination Commissioner and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner when their terms expire late this year and early next."

"The Government simply does not recognise that people living with disabilities and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders suffers from different types of discrimination from other members of the community. Only the maintenance of the specialist commissioners will provide these people with the protection they deserve."

"Just as importantly, today's announcement is a sad reflection on this Government's commitment to the rights of children and young and older Australians."

"At a time when we need a strong commitment by all governments to stop paedophilia, this Government has decided not provide any additional resources for the protection of children."

"At a time when young Australians and the over 55's are facing increasing discrimination in the workplace, this Government is telling them tough luck."

"And at a time when our privacy is increasingly under threat, the Government is continuing to drag its feet. "

"This is a grossly irresponsible decision."

"It is matched only by the Government's staggering decision to cut 43 percent from the budget of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission and the imposition of impossibly high court fees for discrimination complaints. Both these measures are preventing many thousands of Australians from protecting themselves from discrimination."
