Minister for Resources and Energy, Minister for Tourism

The Minister for Resources and Energy, Martin Ferguson AM MP, today launched the Australian Wind Energy Forecasting System (AWEFS) - a key step towards managing future growth in wind energy in Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM). Developed under the Australian

Government’s $14 million Wind Energy Forecasting Capability Initiative, AWEFS provides essential forecasting information to enable the National Electricity Market Management Company (NEMMCO) to efficiently and securely integrate larger amounts of wind energy into the NEM.

Announcing the successful implementation today from NEMMCO’s Operations Centre, Minister Ferguson said: "Better forecasting of the electricity output of wind farms is a crucial step in ensuring optimal NEM operation under the Government’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) and a 20 percent Renewable Energy Target (RET).

“The characteristics of Australia’s energy supply are likely to significantly change following growth in renewable and low-emission energy generation technologies under CPRS and RET. The Australian Government is committed to ensuring that Australia’s energy markets are adequately

equipped for this new operating environment. Better wind energy prediction is critical if we are to reap the environmental benefits of more wind power while retaining the reliable and high quality electricity supply that we all demand.”

The activation of AWEFS in NEMMCO systems follows an 18-month implementation process funded by the Australian Government. NEMMCO selected ANEMOS, a consortium of European wind energy generation forecast providers, for AWEFS development and implementation. ANEMOS have developed an internationally leading wind energy forecasting solution for Australia that is

integrated into NEMMCO’s electricity forecasting and dispatch systems.

"I congratulate NEMMCO on managing this project to fruition. Integration of wind energy forecasts into NEMMCO's automated market operations system is a world first in electricity market management and another demonstration of Australia’s world-class energy market design.”

AWEFS uses state-of-the-art techniques to provide forecasts that will be incorporated into NEMMCO market dispatch decisions. The forecasting system will use nation-wide weather information, live wind farm information and sophisticated modelling to predict how much wind energy will be produced by wind farms. NEMMCO are now to develop Australia-specific system

enhancements, which are due for completion in 2010.

Minister Ferguson advised NEMMCO that he is supportive of further reforms to ensure effective and cost-efficient electricity market transition to a low emissions profile.

“Through my portfolio and my role as chair of the Ministerial Council on Energy, I will continue to provide support for market reforms and initiatives, like wind energy forecasting, that allow the market to most efficiently and effectively operate in a carbon constrained environment," Minister Ferguson said.
