Federal Industry Minister, John Moore, announced today that Australia had been elected to chair a major committee of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Mr Moore said a senior public servant within his Department, Mr John Ryan, had been elected chair o f the OECD’s Industry Committee after a keenly contested selection process over the past twelve months.

“The election of Australia as chair o f the Industry Committee is a major achievement. It is clear recognition by our peers of Australia’s potential to lead international policy development,” Mr Moore said.

The Industry Committee is a peak international OECD forum for the development of industry policy, primarily concerned with the impact o f competition, globalisation and structural change on industry.

The Committee contributes to the development o f industry policy in all OECD countries on issues such as microeconomic and regulatory reform, business environment issues and industry development. M ost recently the Industry Committee presented its work on technology and job creation to the G7 Jobs Summit held earlier this

month in Lille, France.

The Committee will embark upon a new area o f work that will address the fundamental determinants o f a knowledge-based economy. It will examine links between innovation, technology, investment and the performance o f firms and industries.

“With Australia now chairing the Committee, we will be able to inject a stronger voice from the Asia-Pacific region into the OECD,” Mr M oore said.

“It puts us at the centre of international industry policy formulation.”
