MEDIA RELEASE

Senate Congratulates Australian Peackeepers in Rwanda

The Senate today unanimously congratulated the efforts of our troops serving in Rwanda.

Shadow Defence Minister Senator Jocelyn Newman successfully moved a motion noting that the United Nations military chief, Major General Guy Tousignant, has stated that the Australian Medical Support Team in Rwanda has been "a total

success in all areas" and that "the work of the contingent has been brilliant".

The motion congratulates the Australian Medical Support Team for the professional and meritorious manner in which it has performed its duties and served our country.

It also notes the hope of General Tousignant that the work and achievements of the Australian Medical Support Team, in very difficult circumstances, are adequately recognised in Australian history.
