John Howard NEWS RELEASE Member for BennelongShadow Minister for Industrial Relations & Manager of Opposition Business in the House'. ER 33/94

The desire of the president of the ACTU, Mr Ferguson, to barrack for the human rights of Asian workers, particularly those in Indonesia, is commendable.

However, Mr Ferguson should do the right thing by Australians' rights as well by supporting their freedom to choose whether they want to be members of trade unions or not.

Freedom of association is a fundamental human right.

Forcing people to join trade unions is just as much a breach of these rights as denying the right to organise.

Yet the ACTU demands and enjoys just this from the government in industrial relations legislation, breaching the human rights of those who do not wish to be members of trade unions.

Mr Ferguson should contemplate spreading some concern for human rights Australia's way - by advocating freedom of association in the form of voluntary unionism.
