MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS Senator the Hon. Bob Carr January 29, 2012


Foreign Minister Bob Carr and Germany’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Guido Westerwelle today (overnight Jan 28-29 AEDT) signed a bilateral strategic partnership to institutionalise regular high-level policy dialogues between the two countries.

Speaking from Berlin, Senator Carr said Australia and Germany were active regional leaders whose common interests would be advanced through regular policy discussion.

“Australia has co-ordinated closely with Germany during our two-year term on the United Nation’s Security Council, assuming the chairmanship of a number of committees managed so ably by Germany during its 2011-2012 term,” Senator Carr said.

“We also welcome Germany’s close engagement with the Asia-Pacific region and will strengthen joint activities to promote regional growth and security.”

Senator Carr said he and Dr Westerwelle had also discussed the challenges of Syria, Afghanistan and Mali, and working together to progress G20 efforts to strengthen the global economy.

Development assistance was discussed in talks with Germany’s Development Minister, Mr Dirk Niebel Australia and Germany co-ordinate jointly fund or implement projects in 10 countries worth over $200 million. Whilst in Berlin Senator Carr also launched the Ludwig Leichhardt bicentennial celebrations and presented German GP Dr Hans Ullrich Henschel with an honorary Order of Australia Medal for services to the Australian Royal Flying Doctor Service.
