24 January 2013

SATURDAY’S Australia Day program at Taree will celebrate Australia’s 40,000-year history with the highly acclaimed Saltwater Freshwater Festival.

The fourth annual Saltwater Freshwater Festival will beat the rain, which washed out last year’s event, to feature some of Australia’s most talented Aboriginal musicians and dancers.

Independent Lyne MP Rob Oakeshott will be a guest at the festival, and hopes Mid-North Coast residents, no matter where they live, will join in the celebrations at Fotheringham and Queen Elizabeth parks.

“Australians have a lot to reflect on this Saturday, not only the past 100 years of a Commonwealth, or 200 years of European settlement, but a very rich 40,000-year history that beats any cultural history throughout the world.

“We are unique, and we are a nation that has much to celebrate.”

The festival will feature Aboriginal dancers from Taree, Port Macquarie, Bowraville and Coffs Harbour, as well as a diverse music program featuring rock band Coloured Stone, Triple J stars The Medics, blues performer Buddy Knox, country singer Sue Ray and Taree’s own funk-rock band, the Jay Davis Trio.

The program starts at 10am and ends at 8pm, and includes a panel discussion on Constitutional Recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Mr Oakeshott was a member of the Expert Panel on the Constitutional Recognition of Indigenous Peoples and is now on the Parliamentary Committee for Constitutional Recognition. He will be one of the speakers, along with the festival’s patron, Aden Ridgeway, Recognise Campaign Director Tim Gartrell, local resident Sueanne Russell and Alison Page, the festival’s executive officer.

The forum will be held in the Yarn Tent from 3.30pm to 4.30pm and audience members will be able to participate in a question and answer segment.
