MEDIA RELEASE SENATOR THE HON. ERIC ABETZ Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Shadow Minister for Employment & Workplace Relations

Liberal Senator for Tasmania

24th January 2013

Shorten’s Silence on Crossin’s Unfair Dismissal Deafening

“Minister Shorten’s silence on the unfair dismissal of Labor Senator Trish Crossin by the Prime Minister shows Labor’s hypocrisy at its ugly worst,” Senator Abetz said today.

“Whilst demanding employers follow due process before dismissing workers on the one hand, the Prime Minister then turns around and does the exact opposite, publicly humiliating Labor Senator Crossin in the process.”

“No complaints about work performance, punctuality or behaviour. Indeed it seems Senator Crossin’s local managers, the NT Division of the ALP, were very satisfied with her. But head office simply played favourites. No redundancy issue here - just favouritism.”

“Ms Gillard as Workplace Relations Minister legislated an unfair dismissal regime lecturing the community about fairness and process.”

“Bill Shorten did likewise.”

“Now, and for no reason other than they want to give a job to a complete outsider (not even in Labor), Senator Crossin is unceremoniously dumped.”

“Senator Crossin however should not be surprised. Ms Gillard did the same to the Australian people over the Carbon Tax. Indeed she meted out the same treatment to Robert McClelland.”

“Saying one thing and doing the exact opposite appears to be Ms Gillard’s stock in trade, supported by Mr Shorten.”

“Australians will recall that as the ALP and the ACTU denounced the outsourcing of some Queensland Public Service jobs, the ACTU were in fact at it themselves heartlessly dismissing their workers just before Christmas.”

“Labor has an unbeaten record on duplicity,” Senator Abetz said.
