ANNIVERSARY OF 1967 REFERENDUM

Friday 27 May 1994 marks the 27th anniversary of the 1967 referendum which finally gave recognition to indigenous people in this country.

The symbolism of this moment in our history is on a par with the significance of the next day - the anniversary of the Mabo High Court decision.

Both of these events have been catalysts in the recognition of past injustices to indigenous people in Australia and important steps in moving to address current disadvantage.

However, in spite of the significance of the event, and some improvements in Aboriginal well being, this country should be far from complacent that all is well for indigenous Australians.

Well might we mark the day - but we will never be able to truly celebrate until we can say that we have delivered a united Australia which respects this land of ours; values the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage; and provides justice and equity for all.
