Gillard Government Backs a Vibrant Adelaide Media Release AA091/2012 04 May 2012

The Gillard Labor Government is backing South Australia’s plans to rejuvenate central Adelaide with $1 million in funding towards helping the city become more productive, sustainable and liveable.

In the first of a series of projects across the city, Hindley Street West will be rejuvenated as part of an upgrade of the University of South Australia’s precinct.

Member for Adelaide Kate Ellis today joined with South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill and Lord Mayor Steven Yarwood to launch the plans for the transformation of the western end of Hindley Street.

“It is crucial that we continue to rejuvenate the Adelaide CBD to encourage more people to move into what is the undoubtedly the best city in the world,” Ms Ellis said.

“However to do this we must make the city a more vibrant place and ensure that it is easier for city residents to move around. “

“The Australian Government has a vision of Adelaide leading the way in becoming a more productive, sustainable and liveable city for South Australians.”

“This project demonstrates to other cities what can be done to successfully adapt our cities to changing demographics and needs.”

The upgrade to the western end of Hindley Street is a great example of the cooperation needed between governments of all levels to tackle the big challenges facing our cities into the future.

As one of the most urbanised societies on the planet, Australia’s future economic prosperity and social cohesion will depend largely on how successful we are at making our cities work better.

“I’m proud to be part of a Government that has ended the Commonwealth’s self-imposed, decade long exile from our major cities,” Ms Ellis said.

“By engaging with the state government and the local council we can work together to bring about a much needed urban renaissance that will see Adelaide become and even more engaging and vibrant city.”

Vibrant Adelaide: Energising the City is being funded under the Gillard Government’s Liveable Cities program.
