FOLLOWING THE QANTAS/EMIRATES DEAL:

MOVE FOR AIRLINE TICKET TRANSPARENCY

BEFORE YOU BUY A QANTAS TICKET YOU SHOULD BE TOLD UP FRONT IF YOU’RE FLYING ON A DIFFERENT AIRLINE

Independent Senator for South Australia Nick Xenophon has called for changes to Australian consumer law to ensure that airline passengers are informed upfront - at the time of purchasing of a ticket - whether they’ll be flying with a different airline.

The move follows the Qantas/Emirates deal announced yesterday, which will mean more and more consumers who buy a Qantas ticket could find themselves on an Emirates flight.

“This is about fairness and transparency for airline passengers,” Nick said.

“If you paid a premium to fly with one airline, when in fact you’ll be shunted off to another, you should be told that at the time of purchase.”

“For instance many Australians choose to fly Qantas because of its impeccable safety standards, including its pilot training standards. Surely consumers need to know if they won’t be boarding a Qantas plane for any part of the journey.”

Senator Xenophon will consult with consumer groups with a view to getting support for the change to the Australian Competition and Consumer Law Act.
