On Australia Day, commit to buying local this year

Why not renew your commitment to buying from local shops and businesses this year on Australia Day, the 26th of January? That is the call from Federal Member for Murray Dr Sharman Stone.

“Local businesses employ local people” Sharman Stone said. “For students, they have the opportunity to work after school, gain valuable experience and funds for their future.

“Contrary to what is becoming popular opinion, shopping online is not always the cheapest option. A Shepparton man last month paid 20% less for a motorcycle helmet at a local shop than his friend did on eBay.

“If money is spent in a local business, the majority of that money is often re spent in other local businesses and shops. This helps the environment, with reduced transportation needs. The environment is helped further by employees having less time to travel to and from work.

“Small businesses contribute significantly to charity and take an interest in the community’s wellbeing.

“In the country, a locally owned shop or business will be staffed with people who take the time to talk to their customers and get to know them and their particular requirements.

“A locally owned business is operated by people who live locally, and are thus invested in the future prosperity of the region.

“We have some wonderful local tradespeople and shopping opportunities in our region, and some great businesses, large and small” Dr Stone said. “Mark Australia Day on your calendar as the day you will really focus locally.”
