Wakefield’s students await university offers

Wakefield students are only days away from receiving their offers from universities.

Federal Member for Wakefield, Nick Champion wished local students good luck as they prepare to make the transition to tertiary education.

“This is always an exciting time of year for students as they return to university, or begin studying for the first time,” Nick Champion said.

“Once again, this year has seen a nation-wide increase in the number of year 12 students applying for university with more than 147,000 applications submitted - an increase of more than 3,200 from last year.

“In 2013 there will be an extra 190,000 Australians studying at university than was the case when Labor came to office in 2007.

“By lifting the restrictions on the number of university places and making it easier for students to access Youth Allowance and Start-Up scholarships, the Gillard Government has ensured all students with the ability and desire get the chance to go to university.”

Nick Champion said since 2007, an extra 541 people in Wakefield have been given the opportunity to pursue a higher education.

“Labor believes access to university should be based on a student’s ability, rather than their bank balance and background,” Nick Champion said.

“That’s why I’m proud that from 2007-2011 the Gillard Government gave 480 more students in Wakefield from low socioeconomic backgrounds the chance to go to university - and that number is expected to continue to rise.

Nick Champion said all students should be aware that Tony Abbott will slash investment in our universities and increase student fees.

“The Liberals have a track record of cutting higher education to the bone. Tony Abbott has already signalled that he will close the door to our nation’s universities and slash funding for student support.

“We’ve already seen the impact of Liberal Governments in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria where Liberal Premiers have increased fees for TAFE courses, sacked teachers and closed campuses leaving the futures of thousands of young people in doubt.

“Given the chance, Tony Abbott will do exactly the same thing to our universities.”
