Today’s announcement by BlueScope Steel that 170 jobs are to go at their Western Port steel mill is yet more evidence of the Gillard Labor government’s economic mismanagement and bungled manufacturing policies.

“Once again we see job losses and downsizing under this dysfunctional Labor government,” said Sophie Mirabella, Shadow Minister for Industry, today.

“Despite $300m in carbon tax compensation given to BlueScope and Arrium less than eighteen months ago through the Steel Transformation Plan, job losses and economic hardship continue under Labor’s chaotic administration.

“This just goes to show that nothing can compensate for poor economic management.

Ford Australia found itself in a similar situation in July last year, when they were forced to cut over 300 jobs only months after receiving $34m from the Federal Government.

“Labor has destroyed confidence in the economy with their waste, mismanagement and policy changes on the run. This is compounding the damage to our manufacturing industry,” Mrs Mirabella said.

“The carbon tax based on a lie, the confidence-destroying mining tax that is yet to deliver a cent of revenue and the promised surplus that will never be delivered are just three examples of Labor’s economic failure.

“Labor has had long enough to destroy our industries and our economy. Our steel industry can’t afford more Labor.

“The Coalition will restore confidence in the economy, lower taxes, end government waste and implement policies that deliver more jobs, higher wages and better services for Australian families,” Mrs Mirabella concluded.
