Joint Press Release with Warren Truss - Coalition commits $5.6 billion to complete Pacific Highway September 16, 2012

The completion of the Pacific Highway will be a national priority under a future Coalition government.

Today we commit a future Coalition government to providing $5.6 billion to complete the duplication of the Pacific Highway and restore the 80:20 funding partnership with the NSW Government.

Local communities rightly expect the federal and state government to work together and build this significant national

infrastructure project.

We are determined to work with the NSW Government to make this project a reality.

A Coalition government will provide an extra $2.08 billion on top of the $3.56 billion already on the table to enable this vital project to be completed.

Under a federal Coalition government, the $2.08 billion will be redirected from the Epping to Parramatta rail line to guarantee the

completion of the Pacific Highway. The State Government supports this redirection of funding.

This new commitment will bring the Commonwealth’s funding commitment to the standard 80:20 ratio and will get the Pacific Highway completion back on track.

Infrastructure Australia has identified the upgrade of the Pacific Highway as a national priority. The Coalition will make good on

that priority, which Infrastructure Australia says will deliver economic benefits of $1.50 for every $1 spent.

Labor has broken its promise to the communities of the mid and north coast that this dangerous route and vital freight corridor would be upgraded to four lanes and completed by 2016.

With Australia’s freight task set to double by 2030, and treble along the eastern seaboard, the Coalition will deliver productivity

enhancing infrastructure for the long-term efficiency and competitiveness of the nation.

Completing the Pacific Highway upgrade will not only strengthen our economy but it will ensure this important national road is less congested and safer for drivers.

We are determined to ensure that NSW coastal communities, which have been devastated by tragedies on this notorious stretch

of highway, finally get the peace of mind they deserve and the safer road they were promised.

Today’s announcement builds on the Coalition’s existing infrastructure commitments, including $1.5 billion to complete the M4 East in Sydney, $1.5 billion for the East-West Link in Melbourne and $1 billion for the Gateway North upgrade between Nudgee

and the Bruce Highway.
